Why IT: Welcome to Derry Falls Short of Its Potential (2025)

The new HBO series, 'It: Welcome to Derry', has a lot to live up to, especially after the success of the 'It' movies. But here's the catch: despite its promising start, it seems to be repeating a significant blunder from its cinematic counterparts.

Spoiler alert for episode 3!

While the series has received praise for its creative freedom, drawing inspiration from various Stephen King novels and elements omitted from the films, it has also inherited a recurring issue: the overreliance on dodgy visual effects (VFX). This problem was a common criticism of the 'It' movies, particularly the second installment, where digital recreations of Pennywise often fell flat.

Unfortunately, 'Welcome to Derry' has followed suit, and the results are less than impressive. The first three episodes showcase a pattern of underwhelming VFX, from the mutant baby to the cartoonish monsters. This trend reached a low point in episode 3, where a potentially terrifying cemetery scene was marred by subpar visual effects, resembling something out of a 'Ghostbusters' parody.

The issue lies not only with the director, Andy Muschietti, but also with a collective failure of imagination. The setup and design of these scary moments are exceptional, but the execution falls short. For instance, the cemetery scene, where the Losers Club summons Pennywise, builds tension masterfully, only to be let down by the lackluster visual effects.

However, all hope is not lost. The series has demonstrated its ability to deliver genuinely terrifying and emotionally engaging sequences. The lamp scene, the grocery store scare, and Chris Chalk's helicopter vision are prime examples of effective horror storytelling. These scenes showcase Pennywise as a masterful manipulator, exploiting the characters' fears and using classic horror tropes to chilling effect.

The key to the series' success lies in embracing a back-to-basics approach. By focusing on practical effects and imaginative storytelling, 'It: Welcome to Derry' can rise above its cinematic predecessors and deliver a consistently thrilling experience. And with new episodes streaming weekly on HBO and HBO Max, fans are eager to see if the show can correct its course and become the horror masterpiece it has the potential to be.

Do you think the series can overcome this VFX hurdle and deliver the scares it promises? Share your thoughts in the comments!
