Covid cases have been rising with new variants 'Nimbus' and 'Stratus', according to UK officials. These strains, known as Stratus and NB.1.8.1, are now the most prevalent types circulating globally. While experts argue these variants pose no greater threat than previous ones, recent genetic modifications may increase infection risks. A sore throat can sometimes be mistaken for flu or a cold, but symptoms like hoarseness or a 'razor blade' sore throat indicate potential viral activity. As infections worsen, distinguishing between colds and flu can be challenging, especially for those feeling unwell. If you experience symptoms, avoid contact with vulnerable individuals and stay home if possible. Wearing masks and washing hands remain key practices to prevent spread. To alleviate a sore throat, drink plenty of fluids and try honey, as advised by the NHS. The Royal College of GPs reports higher rates of infection among young and elderly people, while hospital admissions linked to the virus are also increasing. Free vaccines are available for those aged 75+, offering protection against both current and new variants. However, vaccinations against flu and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) are recommended as cases rise before winter.
