Celtic and Brendan Rodgers targeted in venomous Hotline slapdown (2025)

The Old Firm both lost at the weekend and some of the Hotline takes are so hot we need some factor 50 slapped on today.

The flamethrower was out for the pair of them with Celtic and Rangers both branded rubbish – and there was even a call for them to LEAVE Scottish football.

First up, Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “Here’s news for both of you – you’re both garbage.

"Any Walter Smith team would leather the present Rangers side and any Martin O’Neill side would wipe the floor with the impostors in the Celtic side.

“Both of them are a laughing stock.

George Wilson, West Sussex, said: “It is a reflection of how bad the standard of the Premiership is when a team as poor as Celtic are 13 points ahead and are possibly going to win the Treble.

“This is a team who have lost six times since the New Year including four in the league and as usual they have failed to win a meaningful tie in Europe. “They can no longer beat a Rangers team who are very often poor but who would be above Celtic with any level of consistency.”

James Wallace emailed: What a weekend for the majority of fans of all the other clubs in the country as they witnessed both Old Firm teams losing in the same round of fixtures.

“It’s embarrassing that both Ferguson and Rodgers threw their toys out of their prams at this, and don't seem to grasp the definition of football match, where two teams of eleven players pit their wits against each other, and any of the two are allowed to win.”

With talk of league reconstruction again, here’s an idea.

John Scott, Grassmoor, said: “Could it be Celtic's players are just getting bored to tears with the SPFL?

“You can’t blame them. Celtic need to move to Dublin, build a 100,000 stadium and join the English pyramid.

“Likewise, Rangers should move to Belfast and they too can join the English Leagues.

“The larger Irish and Scottish clubs left behind can then form a Celtic league that would at least be highly competitive.”

It’s not happening any time soon but the countdown is on for Barry Ferguson’s Rangers as they gear up for Athletico Bilbao.

But Roy Ritchie, Troon, said: “Ferguson’s previous experience was not good with various lower league teams and look at his team selections.

“Can he explain why he has never started Hagi? I really fear for Rangers against Atletico Bilbao, it could be a very embarrassing night.

Philip Borland, via email, said: “Just because Ferguson played for Rangers

doesn't mean he should be manager.

“They should bring someone else in with a lot more experience to be next manager.”

Meanwhile, Peter Cooperwhite, via email, said: “If Rodgers doesn’t play Greg Taylor ahead of a 33-year-old player, then why are we even mentioned as being interested in him coming to Ibrox?”

Celtic have been snoozing at the wheel in recent weeks and Denis Bruce, Bishopbriggs, said: “While Celtic are more than likely to stumble over the line with another Treble, it will not be done with the style the club prides itself on.

“He deserves better from his underperforming players.”

Scott McAdam, Glasgow, said: “Sunday was torture. That’s three defeats in the last six games and it’s not good enough.

“If the players think that the Treble is a shoo in they are deluded. They are lucky to have that big lead and are sleepwalking to the title.”
